Trendy jsou cyklické – víme. I proto dnes s jistotou můžeme říct, že doctor bag obstála ve zkoušce času. Zřejmě tu ani není řeč o vzestupu módního trendu, jako spíš o dlouhodobě kultivovaném módním směru, díky němuž je doctor bag stejně relevantní dnes jako před dekádami. A davy ji milují: je prostorná, praktická a rozhodně v jejím případě nemusíme mluvit o kompromisu mezi estetikou a funkčností. V očích moderní ženy má všechny aspekty úspěchu. Statistiky hovoří jasnou řečí: zájem o takovou Hermès Plume, prostornou tašku hranatého tvaru, podle průzkumu The Real Real v roce 2025 vzrostl. Průměrné prodejní ceny o 25 % oproti loňsku, počet vyhledávání o 24 %.
Ve skutečnosti jde však o modernizaci siluety, jejíž kořeny sahají až do viktoriánské éry. Kožená lékařská brašna, známá také jako medicine bag nebo gladstone bag, byla populární v době Williama Ewart Gladstona, tehdejšího viktoriánského premiéra. Jejími ikonografickými prvky bylo široké otevírání se zlatými komponenty, a silueta prostorná natolik, aby do ní doktoři mohli ukládat léky, které s sebou nosili na návštěvy u pacientů. Připomínala tehdy spíš kožený kufřík, než kabelku. Tato estetika jí však v mnoha současných iteracích zůstala dodnes.
Lví podíl na vzestupu popularity této tašky mají pochopitelně i módní domy. Co spotřebitelé pozorují na módních molech, zrcadlí do jisté míry i poptávka na trhu vintage a second handu. Věrným odrazem historické doktorské tašky je například kultovní silueta Peekaboo od Fendi, ale i Hug Bag od Ferragamo či mnohé vintage varianty italského módního domu. Z doktorské estetiky pravidelně čerpá i značka Bottega Veneta – a to zejména za vlády Matthieu Blazyho, který mistrně interpretoval kožené doplňky domu. Odkaz na ni lze spatřit například v modelu Ciao Ciao nebo Andiamo.
Nejsilnějším hnacím motorem vzestupu doctor bag je s největší pravděpodobností značka Miu Miu. Miuccia Prada dlouhodobě drží prvenství ve schopnosti udávání trendů, které posléze mnohdy nabývají až virální charakter. V postpandemické době to byla kolekce Fall-Winter 2023 s podnázvem Take Care, která se nám vryla do paměti bílými sukněmi zdobenými růžemi, šaty inspirovanými uniformami zdravotnického personálu a v neposlední řadě doctor bags. O něco později, v kolekci Spring-Summer 2025, na piedestal našich šatníků postavila modely kabelek Aventure a Beau, které se rychle dostaly na žebříček nejchtěnějších siluet. A světe div se – opět vycházejí z estetiky tašek pánů doktorů.
Co od doctor bag očekávat v roce 2026? Touha být trendy se velice pravděpodobně přetaví v kultivovanější poptávku po starších modelech kabelek v siluetě doctor bag. To může vrhnout světlo na doposud opomíjené modely. Například taková Prada Bauletto, kdysi oblíbený model praktických žen, dnes spíš artefakt své doby. A stejně tak Loewe Amazona. Ta se sice pravidelně vrací v nových kolekcích módního domu v nových provedeních, ovšem nikdy nestála na stupni vítězů. To se nyní může změnit – noví kreativní ředitelé značky Jack McCollough a Lazaro Hernandez Amazoně odebrali jeden popruh a nechali ji otevřenou, aby nositelka vystavovala její obsah na odiv. Oživení modelu zcela jistě zvedne poptávku po starších modelech. Stejně tak můžeme očekávat, že poroste poptávka po exkluzivnějších modelech domu Hermès – například po zmiňované Plume, ale zřejmě i po největších modelech modelu Birkin. Berte to jako znamení: Go. There is one thing that will cure you perfectly of a diagnosis of fashion fatigue. Let your wardrobe be prescribed a remedy in the form of the doctor bag.

Trends are cyclical – we know that. And that’s why today we can say with confidence that the doctor bag has stood the test of time. It’s not really about the rise of a fashion trend, but rather about a long-cultivated fashion direction that has kept the doctor bag just as relevant today as it was decades ago. And the crowds love it: it’s spacious, practical, and in its case we definitely don’t have to talk about compromising between aesthetics and functionality. In the eyes of the modern woman, it has every ingredient for success. The statistics speak clearly: interest in pieces like the Hermès Plume – a roomy, box-shaped bag – increased in 2025, according to research by The RealReal. Average selling prices rose by 25% compared to last year, and search volume by 24%.
In reality, however, this is a modernized silhouette whose roots reach back to the Victorian era. The leather medical bag, also known as a medicine bag or gladstone bag, was popular during the time of William Ewart Gladstone, the Victorian-era prime minister. Its iconic features included a wide opening with gold components and a silhouette spacious enough for doctors to store the medications they carried with them on patient visits. Back then, it resembled more a leather briefcase than a handbag. However, this aesthetic has remained with it in many of its contemporary iterations to this day.
A significant share in the rise of this bag’s popularity can, of course, be attributed to fashion houses. What consumers observe on the runways is, to a certain extent, reflected in the demand on the vintage and second-hand market. A faithful embodiment of the historical doctor’s bag is, for example, the iconic Peekaboo silhouette by Fendi, as well as the Hug Bag by Ferragamo or many vintage variations from the Italian fashion house. Bottega Veneta also regularly draws from doctor-bag aesthetics – especially under the reign of Matthieu Blazy, who masterfully reinterpreted the house’s leather accessories. This influence can be seen, for instance, in the Ciao Ciao or Andiamo models.
The strongest driving force behind the rise of the doctor bag is most likely the brand Miu Miu. Miuccia Prada has long held first place when it comes to the ability to set trends that often later take on a viral character. In the post-pandemic era, it was the Fall-Winter 2023 collection, titled Take Care, that etched itself into our memory with white skirts adorned with roses, dresses inspired by medical staff uniforms, and, last but not least, doctor bags. A little later, in the Spring-Summer 2025 collection, she placed the Aventure and Beau bag models on the pedestal of our wardrobes, and they quickly climbed to the top of the most coveted silhouettes. And lo and behold – once again, they draw from the aesthetic of doctors’ bags.
What can we expect from the doctor bag in 2026? The desire to stay on-trend will very likely evolve into a more refined demand for older handbag models in the doctor-bag silhouette. This may cast new light on pieces that have long been overlooked. Take the Prada Bauletto, for instance – once a favorite among practical women, now more of an artifact of its era. The same applies to the Loewe Amazona. Although it regularly returns in the brand’s collections in refreshed versions, it has never quite stood on the winners’ podium. That may now change – the brand’s new creative directors, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez, removed one strap and left the Amazona open, allowing the wearer to display its contents. The revival of the model will almost certainly increase demand for its earlier iterations. Likewise, we can expect growing interest in the more exclusive models from Hermès – such as the aforementioned Plume, and likely even the largest sizes of the Birkin. Consider this your sign: Go.
