Canter’s Deli
Alba
Všude můžete najít kus Itálie, a platí to i o Los Angeles. A právě proto v kulisách Hollywoodu funguje. Dejte si tam vychlazené martini, pastu a na chvíli v myšlenkách opusťte ruch města.
In-N-Out Burger

V centrální části se nachází bazén, k němuž mají hosté hned z několika pokojů přímý přístup, uvnitř pak kavárna i bar.

Eames House
Marta
Hybridní galerie a event space Marta má vždy co nabídnout. Prostor funguje jako hybrid galerie, event space a v širším měřítku i jako specifické kulturní zrcadlo LA scény. Výstavy, performance i instalace, nic nemá ambici zůstat tam navždy.
Dnes ho můžete obdivovat i vy.
shop
The Window
V The Window vše jen existuje v přesně nastavené rovnováze světla, prostoru a materiálu.
A pak zamiřte do Architecture Books.

Canter’s Deli
Canter’s is an institution that has been building its legacy since 1931, a place that feels like a time portal into old Los Angeles. While half the city today is trying to become a perfectly lit version of itself, Canter’s remains strangely immune to the aesthetic sterilisation that has consumed LA in recent years. The pastrami sandwich tastes exactly the way an old-school Los Angeles deli should. But beyond the endlessly long menu, it is the atmosphere of the iconic Fairfax Avenue location that truly stays with you. Very little here has changed since the last century. This is simply a place that refused to surrender to time.
Alba
You can find fragments of Italy almost anywhere in the world, and Los Angeles is no exception. Alba is the kind of place where escapism becomes a full sensory experience, best enjoyed through Italian food and a perfectly chilled martini. Its Melrose location feels almost cinematic – appropriately so for Hollywood – balancing old-money aesthetics with the polished elegance of West Hollywood, one of the most visually compelling parts of the city. Alba is an American interpretation of Italy that does not obsess over authenticity at all costs. And perhaps that is precisely why it works so well in Los Angeles. Order pasta, slow down for a moment, and mentally leave the noise of the city behind.
In-N-Out Burger
Of course, Los Angeles offers dining far more elevated than In-N-Out. But there is simply no version of an LA trip in which this cult fast-food institution does not belong. Very few places can compete with the freshness of its ingredients – and you can genuinely taste the difference. It is no surprise that I return every time I find myself back in California. Only during my latest visit did I finally discover all the unofficial variations hidden beyond the menu itself. Did you know, for example, that ordering your cheeseburger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun is called “protein-style”?
drink
Chateau Marmont
People often say the service at Chateau Marmont is notoriously terrible. The reputation has become almost amusing at this point, but naturally I still had to experience it for myself. Visiting this iconic hotel – long established as a Hollywood institution and playground for the famous and powerful – simply belongs to the Los Angeles experience. Rather than spending the night there, I would recommend stopping by for one or two drinks at the bar instead. The signature cocktails are balanced so perfectly that, for a moment at least, you almost forget the service entirely. Regulars also know that the most interesting drinks are often the ones not listed on the menu.
Maru
Joonmo Kim and Jacob Park founded Maru in 2016 and quickly built one of the very few places capable of translating Seoul’s obsessive attention to detail into the rhythm of Los Angeles. The intimate space draws you in through its almost meditative restraint – pale wood, steel, and soft daylight pouring through large windows. Even at the perpetually crowded Los Feliz location, where the line often stretches onto the sidewalk, the atmosphere somehow remains calm. This ritualised detail of everyday life, existing within a city constantly in motion, is something your daily itinerary in LA should absolutely include.
Blue Bottle
Whenever I spend longer periods travelling, I inevitably begin searching for places where I can quietly work for a few uninterrupted hours. That is how I first discovered Blue Bottle years ago – the coffee chain founded in Oakland in the early 2000s, now spread across cities throughout the United States and Asia. Although it has grown into a relatively large brand, there is still room here for freshly roasted coffee and slower brewing methods like pour-over. The interiors, usually defined by precise minimalism, often offer generous seating, making Blue Bottle a temporary refuge whenever you need to tame your schedule while travelling.

Sunset Tower
The Art Deco building housing Sunset Tower carries the legacy of old Hollywood almost literally – from the 1920s through the golden age of cinema to the present day. The hotel possesses a rare ability to feel both intimate and intensely public at the same time. Inside, different layers of Hollywood intersect: the film industry, artists, and visitors who come simply for the strange feeling of having stepped into another decade. Like everyone else, do not skip Tower Bar – even if only for a single drink.
Palihotel Hollywood
I first discovered the Palihotel group years ago in San Francisco. Their hotel, hidden within the otherwise inhospitable Downtown, became our quiet refuge for several nights. Today, these hotels – built around a distinctly contemporary eclectic aesthetic – can be found across multiple cities in the United States, with new locations constantly appearing. The Hollywood property on Sunset Boulevard draws inspiration from the slightly nostalgic atmosphere of classic American motels. At its centre sits a pool accessible directly from several rooms, while inside you will find both a café and a bar.

Eames House
A house as a manifesto of modernism and modern living? That would be the Eames House in Pacific Palisades, the personal home of Charles and Ray Eames, constructed from prefabricated modules. Today, visitors can wander through the surrounding gardens and peer through its glass panels into the interior of a house that hides nothing. Inside, everything remains preserved exactly as the couple left it: travel artefacts, furniture prototypes, books, and personal talismans. It is no surprise that it remains one of the most iconic houses ever created.
Griffith Park
One of my favourite memories tied to Los Angeles is walking through Griffith Park early in the morning. Its hills stretch above the city like a quiet backdrop, observing the constant movement below. Despite its scale, the park feels strangely untouched, almost suspended outside the rhythm of LA itself. And if you continue all the way to the top, the reward is more than just the view. The city suddenly reveals its true proportions in its endless, hazy and cinematic way.
Marta
The hybrid gallery and event space Marta always seems to have something worth seeing. Existing somewhere between a gallery, a cultural venue, and a reflection of the wider LA creative scene, the space thrives on constant movement and reinvention. Exhibitions, performances, installations... nothing here is meant to remain permanent. And perhaps that is precisely what makes Marta so relevant. Check what is happening during your visit and make your way there too.
Schindler House
Raw, experimental, almost laboratory-like – the Schindler House was Rudolf Schindler’s unrestricted field of experimentation when he created this space in 1922, redefining the very idea of home. Shared living units, open plans, concrete, wood, and light as the only form of decoration have remained untouched to this day. Plan your visit shortly after opening hours. You will have the rooms almost entirely to yourself, while the morning light transforms the house like a painted canvas.
Hollyhock House
Frank Lloyd Wright’s name is inseparable from Los Angeles. In the early 20th century, he created Hollyhock House as his first major project in the city – a house that feels at once like a modernist experiment and a strangely mystical object. Geometry, ornament, and light exist here in captivating balance, creating the kind of visual experience capable of fascinating even those otherwise indifferent to architecture. In a city that often feels horizontal and endlessly dispersed, Hollyhock House functions almost like a moment of concentration. Throughout the house, Wright repeatedly incorporated the motif of the hollyhock flower, which ultimately gave the residence its name. And today, more than a century later, you can still experience it for yourself.
shop
The Window
From the outside, it feels like a quiet, almost anonymous object hidden among Melrose Avenue’s galleries and concept stores. But the moment you step inside, you discover an eclectic, almost museum-like world composed of extraordinary objects, sculptural furniture, accessories, and collected artefacts. The space – somewhere between a gallery, an interior archive, and a meticulously edited collection of objects – was founded many years ago by our friend Lorca Cohen and has since become a destination for a clientele unwilling to settle for uniformity. At The Window, everything exists in a precisely calibrated balance of light, material, and space. Most of the pieces inside do not feel new or old in the traditional sense. Rather, they resemble objects that have always belonged to some larger visual ecosystem. As though someone took the entire aesthetic language of Los Angeles and removed all the noise, trend cycles, and excess until only pure form remained. I remember feeling genuinely sad that I could not leave with one of the vintage chairs. But if you stop by, I would recommend taking at least a small amulet or a set of candles home with you.
Architecture Books
Let’s stay on Melrose Avenue a little longer. Ideally, visit over the weekend and wander through the local markets – the kind of places where you unexpectedly discover objects capable of quietly transforming both your wardrobe and your interior. And then make your way to Architecture Books. A bookstore devoted to architecture, design, and independent magazines, where browsing feels slow and intentional, almost ritualistic. What separates Architecture Books from a traditional bookshop is its curatorial approach to the very idea of architecture and the visual world surrounding us. You do not come here simply to buy the newest release. You come to spend time with it. Preferably alongside a cup of coffee, somewhere between stacks of beautifully printed pages and conversations about spaces you may never visit. After all, the best bookstores have never been just about books, but about creating spaces where one can briefly disappear into them.
H.Lorenzo Archive
I am willing to bet you already know H.Lorenzo. Over the years, this concept store – frequented by celebrities as well as LA’s cooler residents – has established itself as one of the city’s defining fashion institutions. But what makes H.Lorenzo truly interesting is the type of people it attracts. Stylists, musicians, fashion students, and celebrities already exhausted by everything they have seen on the runways. Inside, they will find a carefully edited selection from brands such as Ann Demeulemeester, Maison Margiela, Yohji Yamamoto, Hodakova, and even our local Czech label Laformela. Visit not only the H.Lorenzo boutique on Sunset Boulevard, but especially H.Lorenzo Archive hidden in the Arts District, far away from the sterile luxury retail atmosphere of Rodeo Drive. There, among rails of archival pieces and past-season collections, you can still discover extraordinary finds at a fraction of their original price.
Bode
Of course, Bode is a clothing brand. But its Melrose store feels more like a strange hybrid between an American folk archive, a film set, and the wardrobe of a true eclectic. The moment you step inside, it becomes clear that you have not entered an ordinary boutique, but a carefully constructed world where every object carries its own origin, patina, and story. The interior resembles an old natural history museum – dark wood, glass vitrines, hand-painted signs, and curious collectible objects only deepen the impression. It almost feels as though the clothing itself were secondary. But do not be deceived.
Maxfield
The concrete monolith on Melrose feels almost inaccessible from the outside. Inside, however, it conceals a meticulously curated world of contemporary fashion and design. Since the late 1960s, Maxfield has shaped the aesthetic language of Los Angeles long before LA even realised it had one of its own. Tommy Perse was bringing in Yohji Yamamoto, Comme des Garçons, and Rick Owens at a time when most of California was still dressed in pastel polo shirts. Maxfield feels like a private universe for people who approach aesthetics almost existentially, which is precisely why it remains such a magnet for fashion obsessives. Even after decades, it has not lost its mystique – perhaps because it does not merely sell clothing, but an entire way of life: slightly dark, slightly decadent, and unmistakably Los Angeles.
