Long live the bamboo!

Nosily ji Ingrid Bergman, Elisabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly i princezna Diana.
I to přispělo k budování povědomí: modely Gucci Bamboo v mnoha případech nemusí mít logo, bambusové prvky jako podpisová značka stačí.
V únoru roku 2022 představil té doby kreativní ředitel domu Alessandro Michele aktualizovanou podobu nejikoničtějšího modelu z linie Bamboo, a to Gucci Bamboo 1947. Díky věrným reedicím z devadesátých a nultých let si dnes nemusíme vybírat mezi investicí do původního modelu a pořízením verze kabelky z roku 2022.
Návštěvníci tehdy mohli proniknout do světa bambusového dědictví prostřednictvím více než čtyř set archivních a současných verzí. O necelý rok později v rámci milánského Salone del Mobile dům odhalil expozici zasvěcenou bambusu a nazval ji Bamboo Encounters. Vyzval tehdy současné designéry a umělce z celého světa, aby bambus přetvořili odvážným a nečekaným způsobem.

In the fashion world, there are few phenomena quite like the Gucci Bamboo. Originally an experiment born out of necessity, it proved to be a feat of craftsmanship that has endured for decades. Long live the bamboo!

It was worn by Ingrid Bergman, Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Diana, Princess of Wales. A handbag that took on many shapes and silhouettes, yet one element always remained the same: a handle made of curved bamboo. It appeared in films such as Journey to Italy (1954), Le Amiche (1955), Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), and the cult classic Blow-Up (1966). The bamboo-handled bag became a favorite among Hollywood socialites, European aristocrats, and followers of the international jet set. While Diana, Princess of Wales was often seen in the 1990s carrying a practical tote bag – first created in 1991 and reintroduced in 2021 by Alessandro Michele to mark what would have been the princess’s 60th birthday, renamed the Gucci Diana – Elizabeth Taylor, by contrast, preferred the original model 0633 dating back to 1947.
It was precisely then that the conditions were right for the creation of the now-iconic bamboo-handled bag. The original Gucci Bamboo was introduced to the market in 1947 by the brand’s founder, Guccio Gucci. In postwar Italy, leather materials were in short supply – yet it is often a necessity that drives innovation. Bamboo proved to be a readily available material at the time, imported from Japan, easy to shape and remarkably durable. Craftsmen improvised and experimented with it until the now-iconic bamboo handle was born, a feature that continues to appear on the bags in various iterations to this day. It was a bold move at a time when handbags typically featured leather handles. Time, however, proved it to be the right one. The bag’s popularity secured the line a permanent place in the brand’s portfolio even after the war, and bamboo has since become just as emblematic of Gucci as its equestrian references or monogram canvas. In 1958, the Gucci Bamboo was patented, ensuring that no other brand could imitate it. This exclusivity further strengthened its recognition: many Gucci Bamboo models do not even need a visible logo, the bamboo detail itself is signature enough.
Florentine craftsmen, just as they did decades ago, continue to produce bamboo handles and components to this day. They begin by selecting only the highest-quality pieces of bamboo. These are then softened so they can be carefully bent into the desired shape over an open flame. The process is similar to the production of bentwood furniture. There, however, the resemblance ends. The bamboo is subsequently treated with several layers of lacquer, which are then heat-sealed. Thanks to this process, each handbag becomes unique. Once completed, the handle is attached to the bag, along with the signature bamboo turn-lock closure.
In February 2022, then-creative director of the house Alessandro Michele unveiled an updated version of the most iconic model from the Bamboo line: the Gucci Bamboo 1947. During his brief tenure at Gucci, his successor Sabato De Sarno continued to work intensively with the bamboo heritage, enriching it with the deep red hue Rosso Ancora. In this form, the Gucci Bamboo 1947 is known today. Thanks to faithful reissues from the 1990s and 2000s, collectors no longer have to choose between investing in the original model and purchasing the 2022 version. Tom Ford reimagined it in satin, while the period between 2010 and 2011 is also notable, when under Frida Giannini the silhouette underwent a modern update. The Bamboo line expanded, and many bags were fitted with shoulder straps for easier wear. Today, bamboo creations are no longer limited to the original 0633 silhouette where it all began. The handle made from this woody grass now defines not only the aforementioned Gucci Diana, but also the princess-favored Diana Bamboo Bucket, the Padlock Bamboo Shoulder Bag, silhouettes from the Gucci Marmont line, and the previous decade’s bestseller, the Gucci Bamboo Dionysus. Beyond handbags, bamboo details have extended into ready-to-wear and accessories as well – from shoes with bamboo heels to sandals adorned with bamboo embellishments.
The Italian fashion house is fully aware of the legacy of its Bamboo heritage. To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Gucci’s presence in Japan in 2024, the brand unveiled an exhibition in Tokyo dedicated to the Bamboo 1947 bag. The show featured sixty vintage models from the 1980s and 1990s, reinterpreted by Japanese artists and craftsmen. Visitors were able to explore the world of the bamboo legacy through over 400 archival and contemporary iterations. Less than a year later, during Milan’s Salone del Mobile, the house presented an exhibition focused on bamboo, titled Bamboo Encounters. Contemporary designers and artists from around the world were invited to transform bamboo in bold and unexpected ways. Their works offered fresh perspectives on this primordial material, where it all began. Today, we can say with certainty that for the classic yet timeless Bamboo, this is only the beginning. In an era marked by generic AI outputs and a lack of invention in the fashion world, it is craftsmanship that triumphs amidst the sea of uniformity.
