Při pohledu na ni si říkám, zda jsem s takovou raritou už měla někdy dříve tu čest. Jistě, pracuji v módním průmyslu. Můj život je bohatý na one-of-kind a rare objevy. Možná to je to, co mě na takové práci tak baví. Nedovolí vám začít se nudit. A ve chvíli, kdy jen trochu začnete pochybovat, vám do cesty přihraje Birkin 35 v Barenia Faubourg provedení. Ta, se kterou mám tu čest, byla vyrobena roku 2021. Má zlatý hardware ve skvělém stavu a kontrastní sedlářské prošívání podél švů, které zaujme na první pohled. Pohupuje se na ní ikonický clochette s visacím zámkem a dvěma klíči.

Birkin v Barenia Faubourg provedení je tu pro ty, kdo ji docení. A ona je tu proto, aby každý den potěšila oko svého nositele i portfolio toho, kdo ji skrývá před zraky všech a pohlíží na ni jako na investici. The first scenario: you carry it every day and fall in love with every trace of patina it acquires along the journey of your life. The second scenario: you place it at the bottom of its orange box, honor its untouchable nature, and patiently wait for it to become the best fashion investment of your life.

When I look at it, I wonder whether I have ever had the honor of encountering such a rarity before. Certainly, I work in the fashion industry. My life is full of one-of-a-kind and rare discoveries. Perhaps that is what makes this work so enjoyable – it never lets you get bored. And just at the moment when you start to have even the slightest doubt, a Birkin 35 in Barenia Faubourg comes into view. The one I have the honor of encountering was made in 2021. It features gold hardware in excellent condition and contrasting saddle stitching along the seams that immediately catches the eye. It is adorned with the iconic clochette containing a padlock and two keys.
Hermès introduced the Birkin in Barenia Faubourg leather in 2017. The subtly grained leather is known for its labor-intensive tanning process, which highlights the material’s natural characteristics. Thanks to its textured surface, it retains the distinctive scent of its smooth predecessor, Barenia, but with a fine grain on its surface reminiscent of the more familiar Togo or Clemence leathers. This gives it properties such as better scratch resistance compared to traditional smooth Barenia. The characteristic patina it develops over the years reflects the natural personality of vegetable-tanned leather. For this reason, there are essentially two ways to approach ownership of such a rare Birkin: to follow one of the two previously described scenarios.
Barenia Faubourg is significantly rarer than the standard leathers the house typically uses for handbags. Most of this type of leather is reserved for men’s collections and special pieces. An especially unusual Birkin is the 35 cm size, as most special leathers are usually allocated to the smaller Birkin 25 and Birkin 30 models. Birkins 35 in special leathers, such as Barenia Faubourg, achieve higher prices than models in standard leathers. The value of a handbag in Barenia Faubourg is therefore determined not only by its age but above all by the condition and rarity of the specific model. Since the leather develops a patina over time – and it should be noted that, thanks to its characteristic grain, signs of wear appear rather elegantly– Barenia Faubourg is appreciated by collectors who value the natural formation of patina and the leather’s distinctive character.
Do not expect a permanent, flawless appearance with Barenia Faubourg. This handbag exists either to be tucked away in that iconic orange box and preserved as a perfect piece to be passed down through generations or eventually sold, or, conversely, to be loved and used freely, rewarding its owner after many years with an enviable patina. It is not for everyone, I admit. Yet both of the previously imagined scenarios share the same conclusion. A Birkin in Barenia Faubourg exists for those who truly appreciate it. And it exists to delight the eye of its owner every day, as well as the portfolio of someone who hides it from view and sees it as an investment. In either case, you become the happiest collector in the world.
