Když v září roku 2022 značka Dolce & Gabbana odhalila kolekci, která vznikla ve spolupráci s Kim Kardashian, mluvilo se o spojení desetiletí. O to zajímavější je, že v rámci tohoto partnerství vlastně moc nového nevzniklo. Naopak. Bylo jakýmsi ohlédnutím zpět do minulosti za tím, co už tu k vidění bylo, a do jisté míry touhou těžit z vlastních archivů módních značek.

Možná to byla touha tvůrců značky Domenica Dolce a Stefana Gabbany svézt se na vlně tehdy raketově rostoucí obliby vintage módy. Možná také snaha vynést na světlo to, co neodmyslitelně tvoří DNA značky. A dost možná obojí. Kolekce Spring-Summer 2023 nesoucí podnázev „Ciao, Kim“ byla exkursem do hlubin tvorby značky z devadesátých a nultých let. Jak uvádí magazín Vogue, Kim Kardashian se před několika lety nechala slyšet, že si se svým stylistou sestavili vysněný seznam artiklů od Dolce & Gabbana. Ten údajně zahrnoval desítky archivních modelů značky, jež Kim postupně pořizovala, kdykoli je našla k dispozici. Z této neustále se rozrůstající soukromé sbírky čerpala i při oblékání na svatbu své sestry Kourtney v Portofinu, což právě odstartovalo vývoj kolekce, která vznikla ve spolupráci Kim a značky.
Show tehdy doprovázel černobílý film, zřejmě inspirovaný velice podobným počinem Andyho Warhola, jenž se počátkem 80. let natočil při pojídání hamburgeru. Kim v tomto snímku ve zpomaleném záběru jedla špagety – což byl mimochodem výjev, který tehdy posloužil i jako pozvánka na show v podobě trička s potiskem, – zatímco kolem ní na módním mole procházely modelky v modelech inspirovaných jejím vlastním archivem. V tom momentu bylo cosi zvláštně popkulturního. Už jen spojení se jménem Kim Kardashian by mohlo být na první pohled banální až laciné, jednoduchý kalkul či marketingový tah. Davy po této spolupráci šílely, a Kim získala další položku do svého nabitého portfolia.
O to pozoruhodnější je fakt, že v rámci této kolekce vlastně příliš nového nevzniklo. Protože ačkoli looky, které toho dne modelky oblékly, byly novými kreacemi, zrcadlily vlastně důvěrně ty, které byly na trh uvedeny mezi lety 1987 až 2007. Například červené šaty s kabátkem ve stejném odstínu, které byly původně viděny v ready-to-wear kolekci Spring 1992. Nebo malé černé lingerie šaty v kombinaci s podvazky a vysokými punčochami z té samé kolekce, které v té z roku 2022 získaly pouze důmyslné prošívání a jinak byly takřka totožné s těmi archivními. Ready-to-wear kolekci Spring 1998, v níž se objevily průsvitné šaty zdobené plastickými motýly, zas připomněl kožený korzet, na němž také poletovali. Skutečný sběratelský kousek z ready-to-wear kolekce Spring 2007 v podobě metalických minidress se na módní molo vrátil ve variantě téměř jedna ku jedné. V kolekci Spring-Summer 2023 se též objevily westernové kalhoty (ready-to-wear Spring 1999), vrstvené průsvitné šaty s odhalenými švy (podobné těm z ready-to-wear kolekce Spring 2002), černý průsvitný overal zdobený kamínky (ready-to-wear Spring 2001) nebo zcela průsvitné krajkové šaty (ready-to-wear Spring 1999).
V kolekci z roku 2022 se objevil ještě jeden nepřehlédnutelný look: průsvitný kabát doplněný o kovový korzet. Onen korzet se v historii značky objevuje opakovaně. S umírněnější verzí jsme se setkali v ready-to-wear kolekci Fall 1995, stejný korzet jako ten z kolekce vytvořené ve spolupráci s Kim Kardashian byl pak produkován v roce 2007. Ten mám mimochodem na sobě a věřím, že spolu s ním si pořizujete i zcela novou identitu. Pokud bych mohla nějak oblékat své alter ego, nechť je to do tohoto korzetu!
Některé artikly z kolekce jsou u Dolce & Gabbana stále k dostání. Například právě corset belt z mosazi se zámkem na klíček za částku přesahující šest tisíc eur. Ale i rukavice s křišťály, metalické podprsenky nebo obuv. Při pohledu na to si říkám: ještě štěstí, že máme vintage market. A v ten samý moment se oddávám intenzivnímu honu za původními modely, které Kim, Domenico a Stefano znovu vynesli na světlo současnosti.
O více než dva roky později jsme svědky častých návratů módních značek do hlubin historie. Když už tu všechno jednou bylo, nezbývá než obrátit se zpět směrem k tomu, co v minulosti zafungovalo. Ovšem do jisté míry – móda je kreativní odvětví, které navzdory opakujícím se trendům pronikajícím do mainstreamové kultury má posouvat hranice možného i nemožného neustále vpřed. Archivní kolekce je jednoduchou náplastí na skutečnost, že je móda v současnosti tak jednotvárná. Vždyť každý, kdo se na poli archivní módy umí alespoň trochu pohybovat, si pro svůj kus osobitosti dojde.

When Dolce & Gabbana unveiled a collection created in collaboration with Kim Kardashian in September 2022, it was widely described as a union of decades. All the more intriguing, then, is the fact that this partnership did not actually produce much that was new. Quite the opposite. It amounted to a retrospective glance back at what had already been seen, and, to a certain extent, to a desire to mine the fashion house’s own archives.

Perhaps it was Domenico Dolce’s and Stefano Gabbana’s desire to ride the wave of the then rapidly growing popularity of vintage fashion. Perhaps it was also an effort to bring to light what has always been an inseparable part of the brand’s DNA. And quite possibly both. The Spring-Summer 2023 collection, subtitled Ciao, Kim, was an excursion into the depths of the brand’s work from the 1990s and the early 2000s. As Vogue reports, Kim Kardashian said a few years ago that she and her stylist had put together a dream list of Dolce & Gabbana pieces. Reportedly, it included dozens of the brand’s archival designs, which Kim gradually acquired whenever she found them available. She also drew from this ever-expanding private collection when dressing for her sister Kourtney’s wedding in Portofino – an event that ultimately set in motion the development of the collection created in collaboration between Kim and the brand.
The show itself was accompanied by a black-and-white film, seemingly inspired by Andy Warhol’s well-known early-1980s piece in which he filmed himself eating a hamburger. In the film, Kim is shown eating spaghetti in slow motion – an image that, incidentally, also served at the time as an invitation to the show in the form of a printed T-shirt – while models walked the runway around her wearing looks inspired by her own archive. There was something strangely pop-cultural about the moment. The very association with the name Kim Kardashian could, at first glance, appear banal or even cheap – a simple calculation or a marketing ploy. Yet crowds went wild for the collaboration, and Kim added another entry to her already packed portfolio.
All the more striking, then, is the fact that this collection did not actually introduce much that was new. Although the looks worn by the models that day were newly created, they closely mirrored designs that had originally been introduced between 1987 and 2007. Take, for example, the red dress with a matching jacket, first seen in the Spring 1992 ready-to-wear collection. Or the little black lingerie dress paired with garters and thigh-high stockings from that same collection, which in its 2022 iteration was updated only with intricate quilting and was otherwise almost identical to the archival original. The Spring 1998 ready-to-wear collection, which featured sheer dresses adorned with three-dimensional butterflies, was echoed by a leather corset on which the butterflies appeared to flutter once again. A true collector’s piece from the Spring 2007 ready-to-wear collection – a metallic minidress – returned to the runway in an almost one-to-one reproduction. The Spring-Summer 2023 collection also included Western-style trousers (ready-to-wear Spring 1999), layered sheer dresses with exposed seams (reminiscent of those from ready-to-wear Spring 2002), a black sheer jumpsuit embellished with crystals (ready-to-wear Spring 2001), as well as fully transparent lace dresses (ready-to-wear Spring 1999).
The 2022 collection also featured another striking look: a sheer coat paired with a metallic corset. That corset has appeared repeatedly throughout the brand’s history. A more subdued version was seen in the Fall 1995 ready-to-wear collection, while the exact same corset as the one from the collaboration with Kim Kardashian was produced in 2007. Incidentally, I’m wearing it myself, and I believe that along with it, you’re also acquiring a completely new identity. If I could dress my alter ego in anything, let it be in this corset!
Some pieces from the collection are still available from Dolce & Gabbana. For example, the brass corset belt with a padlock, priced at over six thousand euros. But also crystal-embellished gloves, metallic bras, or footwear. Looking at it all, I can’t help but think: lucky for us there’s the vintage market. And in that same moment, I give myself over to an intense hunt for the original pieces that Kim, Domenico, and Stefano have once again brought back into the light of the present.
More than two years later, we are witnessing frequent returns of fashion houses to the depths of their own histories. Once everything has already been seen, there is little choice but to look back toward what worked in the past. Yet only to a certain extent – fashion is a creative field that, despite recurring trends making their way into mainstream culture, is meant to constantly push the boundaries of what is possible and impossible. Archival collections are a simple balm for the fact that fashion today can feel so uniform. After all, anyone who knows their way around archival fashion can always find a piece to express their own individuality.
